Top Free Web Hosting Sites for Students Happy Using Sub-domains

Choosing the best free web hosting sites for my college students used to be tricky.

It was OK to use hosted website builders for SOME beginner classes but, advanced courses needed more. Learners had to upload HTML, CSS, JavaScript, media and PHP files.

I’ve got things sorted now. This page lists the very best free web hosting for students that I have come across.

These websites may be suitable for your own projects. However, I compiled this list with academic learners in mind. Please be mindful of that.

The main drawback of using these sites for personal or business projects is the use of sub-domains (e.g yoursite.freehost.tld). You simply HAVE to pay something if you want you use your own domain name.

You should find that it is worth scanning all of my recommendations. However, I have divided them into categories to make this page easier to wade through. Choose the category of most interest if you know the type of platform you are interested in.

Free Website Builder Powered Hosting

Many beginner courses in web design only need students to build a website. There is no need for them to master or explain control panel features. All they need is a simple interface.

So…, the first part of the list recommends four hosted website builders: Wix, Weebly and WordPress (.com). Zyro (used by 000webhost) is another one you might want to consider.

Free web hosting is included with all four of these and, you can begin creating a website right after signing up.

Wix.com

I recommend Wix to my students when they need to create small ‘brochure’ websites and mini blogs. The tech-free, drag-and-drop, functionality and ready-made website templates are usually all they need to produce a site.

Even complete novices should be able to create stunning looking websites soon after they start using Wix. Because everything can be done from a web browser and the interface is intuitive and so easy to use.

  • Storage: 500MB
  • Domain: Wix.com subdomain
  • Bandwidth: 500MB
  • Email: Yes
  • eCommerce: No
  • Design: Drag-and-drop editor, templates and apps

Wix free hosting limitations:

  • Minimal storage and bandwidth.
  • Paid upgrades are needed to remove ads, to connect your own domain name and to increase storage and bandwidth allowances.

WordPress.com

Using WordPress.com is a good option for students in several situations. It is useful for those who are likely to progress to more advanced web design courses and those who are likely to move on to jobs industry.

Why? Because WordPress.com is a hosted version of the underlying CMS software with the same name. WordPress is also immensely popular out in the real world. It is used by organizations of all sizes. Including small business, governments and web design firms.

This means that students are highly likely to come across WordPress again in the future. Getting experience of it while learning can only be a good thing.

WordPress.com has a different user experience to online website builders like Wix. It has less drag-and-drop functionality, which makes it less intuitive to use for complete novices.

However, WordPress.com does feature a huge range of customizable themes (which are roughly equivalent to templates). Students with intermediate coding skills will probably appreciate the options to edit and modify those themes manually.

  • Storage: 3GB
  • Domain: WordPress.com subdomain
  • Bandwidth: 3GB
  • Email: Yes
  • eCommerce: No

WordPress.com free plan limitations:

  • Paid upgrades are needed to use advanced design features, remove ads, connect your own domain name and to increase storage and bandwidth allowances.

Weebly.com

Weebly is another popular drag-and-drop website builder which is bundled with web hosting. The service has been around since 2006 and interestingly, the website was founded by three students from Penn State University.

According to Newsweek, the founders built on the need for students to maintain web-based portfolios. They ended up creating a tool that made it easy for anyone to create a website.

  • Storage: 500MB
  • Domain: Weebly.com subdomain
  • Bandwidth: Unlimited
  • Email: No
  • eCommerce: No
  • Design: Ready-made templates, custom JavaScript, HTML, and CSS allowed

Weebly free hosting limitations:

  • Minimal storage and bandwidth.
  • Paid upgrades are needed to connect your own domain name, remove ads and to increase storage and bandwidth allowances.

000webhost.com

000webhost offers three options: Zyro website builder, upload your own HTML and free WordPress hosting. However, these options are easy to miss. Sign up AND create the URL for your first website to access all the options.

There seems to be little reason not to use Zyro directly now. That would get rid of the added complexity of going through 000webhost.

However, if you want to use the other options or keep those open to you for use in the future then 000webhost is well worth trying out.

  • Storage: 300MB
  • Domain: 000webhostapp.com subdomain
  • Bandwidth: 3GB
  • Email: 5 forwarders
  • eCommerce: Yes
  • Design: Zyro, WordPress, custom HTML

000Webhost limitations:

  • 1 hour daily sleep time prevents your site from being accessible 24/7.
  • Slow loading speeds.
  • Minimal storage.
  • Paid upgrades are needed to connect your own domain name, remove branding and to increase storage and bandwidth allowances.

Zyro.com

One of the advantages of using Zyro directly is that additional features are explained on it’s website.

One interesting feature is the ‘AI Writer’. The developers describe this as “a powerful content-generating tool” that you can use to “fill your website with great-sounding content”.

  • Storage: 500MB
  • Domain: zyrosite.com subdomain
  • Bandwidth: 500MB
  • Email: No
  • eCommerce: No
  • Design: Dozens of designer-made templates

Zyro website builder limitations are much the same as the other drag-and-drop services:

  • Minimal storage and bandwidth.
  • Paid upgrades are needed to connect your own domain name, remove ads and to increase storage and bandwidth allowances.
